Welcome to the traditional Identity Crisis. This is version 9 of this crisis, as this is the 9th event. Breaking tradition this time, again, to come up with a solution that hopefully results in a number of very nice name suggestions.

How to join

You can send in your submission using the guidelines below. It's possible to do that either privately or publicly.

Expectations far exceed just an acronym and name (we can generate those by the thousands). Expectations include a context, deeper meaning and mood board as well. All of this to better make the undemocratic reviewers understand why the proposed identity matches the event and hacker culture. See the presentation below for examples. An example suggestion is also available on this page.

Not publicly (mail)

Send in private suggestions to identitycrisis@ifcat.org. The private suggestions mail box will be opened on the 15th or 16th of November. We will not look at it before.

Publicly (wiki)

Create a new one using this form: Form:Identitycrisischallenge

Note the "edit with form" on created pages, this might help with easy editing.

Please respect each others suggestions and do not wildly edit someone else's suggestion: just create a new entry with your suggestions if you want to improve upon with major changes. Note that of course you can of course work together on a suggestion(!).

Public suggestions

This is an automatically updated list. You can add entries to this list by filling out the Form:Identitycrisischallenge. Your entry will be added to this list automatically. You can also use "edit with form" on the pages created.

Guidance on how to suggest a new identity

IDENTITY CRISIS V9

[how can i hold all this identity]

Identitycrisisv9.001.jpg

Challenge

Every major Dutch hacker event has had a new acronym and name. These where of varying quality. This name was traditionally decided by a "cabal". SHA2017 broke the mode with the result of a lot of time spent on discussion and names. It became a meme. To keep the orga focussed, a hybrid solution is proposed that allows freedom, community input and a fixed deadline.

Identitycrisisv9.002.jpg

The Process

  1. Today: Describe expected outcomes and success criteria.
  2. Today: Voting on what will be created.
  3. What will be voted on will become largely the identity of the next event.
  4. 15/16th of November: Projectleiding reviews entries and undemocratically decides
  5. Beginning of December: first batch of promo stuff is made to drop the new thing
  6. If all fails, it will be SHA2021, Copy Paste Improve
Identitycrisisv9.003.jpg

Steps to come to great identity

Do not think of what, do think of "WHY".

An identity is more than just some words.

Identitycrisisv9.004.jpg

The Golden Circle

Simon Sinek - Start with Why.

5 minute version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPYeCltXpxw

Ten million other renditions of this talk at various places: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=imon+Sinek+-+Start+With+Why

Book: https://simonsinek.com/product/start-with-why/

Identitycrisisv9.005.jpg

Success Criteria

  1. Ideology: preferably focussed on the WHY
  2. Has an explanation about the deeper message it tries to convey to gain better understanding
  3. Have a list of related keywords / context and synonyms to expand the meaning
  4. Has a mood board with references to better understand its meaning
  5. Has an overarching explanation of what ties everything together

Secondary criteria

  1. Contains references to hacks, hacker/computer/nerd/it culture
  2. Is uplifting, inspiring
  3. Can be designable (see mood board)
  4. Makes you want to hack things
  5. When relevant: make your p.u.n.c.t.u.4.t.i.o.n and s T y L i N g cl34r...
Identitycrisisv9.006.jpg

The acronym / name scheme

  • The Acronym has 3 letters
  • The Acronym is preferably pronounceable
  • The Acronym contains an H
  • The Acronym is the short version of the name

  • The Name is (±)3 words
  • The Name is in English
  • One of the words in the name starts with Hack(.*)
Identitycrisisv9.017.jpg

Example Name + Acronym

A complete entry consists out of a well thought out concept, which is hard to create(!)

  • Name:
  • What is the (deeper) message the name tries to convey:
  • Related Keywords / synonyms:
  • Acronym:
  • What is the (deeper) message the acronym tries to convey:
  • Mood Board::
  • What concepts or ideas bind these elements (name, acronym, mood):
Identitycrisisv9.007.jpg

Mood Board

A mood board helps with getting a better understanding about the name, acronym and its deeper meaning. This is a mood board that you can use to create an 'example themed' event.

Identitycrisisv9.009.jpg

Failed Example

Sending in just a name and acronym, without any deeper meaning is likely to be discarded.

Identitycrisisv9.010.jpg

Protips

  • Yes: you can use AI, constraint solvers and algorithms to make something up!
  • Yes: Take your time: giving words to deeper meanings is hard
  • Yes: you can send in multiple suggestions
  • No: the format is not important (pdf, jpg, ppt, ods), opening it quickly without pain __IS__
  • Yes: there is flexibility and perhaps you can find ways to bend to rules (aka hacking)
  • No: Bragging about your suggestion does not make it better (and probably hinders other's creativity)
  • Yes: Be excellent to each other: don't bash or disapprove, try to find the good things

The Vote

>42 for a new name and backronym, 9 for keeping "SHA / Still Hacking Anyway" with a tagline. About 20 people did not vote. Clear decision.
